About the EBV gH/gL/gp42 Protein Complex
The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV, Human Herpesvirus 4) gH/gL/gp42 complex is a critical component of the viral entry machinery required for infection of B lymphocytes. The complex consists of glycoprotein H (gH), glycoprotein L (gL), and gp42, which function together to mediate receptor recognition and membrane fusion during viral entry. Binding of gp42 to HLA class II molecules on B cells triggers conformational changes that activate the EBV fusion machinery and facilitate viral infection. The gH/gL/gp42 complex therefore plays a central role in determining EBV host-cell tropism and infectivity.
Because of its essential role in viral entry, the gH/gL/gp42 complex has become an important target for EBV vaccine development, neutralizing antibody discovery, structural biology studies, and antiviral therapeutic research. Multiple studies have demonstrated that antibodies targeting gH, gL, or gp42 can block EBV infection and provide valuable insights into mechanisms of viral neutralization.

Biological Significance of the gH/gL/gp42 Complex
