About the EBV gH/gL Protein Complex
The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV, Human Herpesvirus 4) gH/gL protein complex is a critical component of the viral fusion machinery required for infection of both epithelial cells and B lymphocytes. Glycoprotein H (gH) and glycoprotein L (gL) form a conserved heterodimer that functions together with glycoprotein B (gB) to mediate membrane fusion during viral entry. Because gH/gL is essential for EBV infectivity, it has become one of the most important targets for vaccine development, neutralizing antibody discovery, and antiviral therapeutic research.
The gH/gL complex participates in receptor recognition and activation of the viral fusion process, enabling EBV to enter susceptible host cells.
