The Ebola virus nucleoprotein (NP) is the major structural component of the viral nucleocapsid and is essential for viral genome encapsidation, transcription, and replication. NP binds the viral negative-sense RNA genome to form the ribonucleoprotein (RNP) complex together with VP35, VP30, and the viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (L), protecting the viral genome and coordinating viral RNA synthesis. As one of the most abundant and highly conserved Ebola virus proteins, NP is widely used in studies of viral replication, diagnostic assay development, immunology, and antiviral research.
