Rabies Virus
Rabies virus is an enveloped, bullet-shaped, negative-sense, single-stranded RNA virus belonging to the genus Lyssavirus in the family Rhabdoviridae. It is the causative agent of rabies, a fatal zoonotic disease that affects the central nervous system of mammals. The virus is primarily transmitted through the saliva of infected animals, most commonly by bites, and once clinical symptoms appear, rabies is almost invariably fatal.
The rabies virus genome is approximately 12 kb in length and encodes five structural proteins arranged in the order N–P–M–G–L. The nucleoprotein (N) encapsidates the viral RNA genome to form the ribonucleoprotein complex, while the phosphoprotein (P) and large polymerase (L) mediate viral transcription and replication. The matrix protein (M) is responsible for virus assembly and budding, and the surface glycoprotein (G) mediates receptor binding and membrane fusion during viral entry.

Among these proteins, the G glycoprotein is the principal target of virus-neutralizing antibodies and serves as the major antigen in rabies vaccine development. The N nucleoprotein is highly conserved and is widely used in diagnostic assays, serological studies, and basic virology research. Recombinant proteins and antibodies are valuable tools for vaccine development, diagnostic assay development, antigen characterization, and immunological studies.
