About Human Enterovirus A71 (EV71) VP1 Protein
Human Enterovirus A71 (EV71) is a major causative agent of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) and is associated with severe neurological complications including meningitis, encephalitis, and acute flaccid paralysis. The VP1 protein is the largest and most immunogenic structural protein of the EV71 capsid and plays a critical role in viral attachment, receptor recognition, host-cell entry, and viral infectivity. Together with VP2 and VP3, VP1 is exposed on the surface of the viral particle and contributes to the antigenic properties of the virus. Numerous studies have demonstrated that VP1 contains the major neutralizing epitopes recognized by protective antibodies, making it one of the most important targets for vaccine development and immune response studies.
Because of its strong immunogenicity and critical role in viral pathogenesis, VP1 has become one of the most extensively studied EV71 antigens.
