About Anti-gp120/gp160 (SIVmac239) Rabbit Polyclonal Antibody
The Simian Immunodeficiency Virus (SIV) mac239 strain is one of the best-characterized molecular clones used in non-human primate models of HIV/AIDS. The viral envelope glycoprotein Env is synthesized as the precursor gp160, which is proteolytically cleaved into the surface glycoprotein gp120 and the transmembrane glycoprotein gp41. The gp120 subunit mediates viral attachment to the CD4 receptor and co-receptors, while gp41 promotes membrane fusion and viral entry. Because the envelope glycoprotein is the only viral protein exposed on the virion surface and is the principal target of neutralizing antibodies, SIVmac239 gp120/gp160 is extensively used in studies of viral entry, vaccine development, antibody responses, and HIV/SIV pathogenesis.
eEnzyme's Anti-gp120/gp160 (SIVmac239) Rabbit Polyclonal Antibody is generated by in vivo genetic immunization using the SIVmac239 gp120 antigen, producing high-affinity antibodies that recognize the native conformation of the viral envelope glycoprotein. This approach promotes immune responses against correctly folded and naturally glycosylated Env proteins, resulting in excellent recognition of native SIV gp120/gp160. The immunogen is derived from SIVmac239 (GenBank accession M33262), and the antibody specifically reacts with SIV gp120/gp160 proteins. It is immunogen affinity-purified and is suitable for Western blotting, ELISA, and other immunological assays, providing a valuable reagent for SIV research, recombinant protein characterization, vaccine development, and non-human primate studies.

Biological Significance of SIVmac239 gp120/gp160
The SIVmac239 envelope glycoprotein is essential for viral attachment, receptor recognition, and membrane fusion during infection. Following proteolytic cleavage of gp160 into gp120 and gp41, the mature Env trimer mediates binding to CD4 and co-receptors, initiating viral entry into susceptible cells. SIVmac239 has become the gold-standard pathogenic SIV strain for rhesus macaque models because it closely mimics many aspects of HIV-1 infection and AIDS progression in humans. Consequently, its envelope glycoprotein is widely used for evaluating vaccine candidates, characterizing neutralizing antibody responses, studying viral evolution, and investigating mechanisms of immune escape. Broadly reactive anti-gp120/gp160 antibodies are valuable tools for detecting recombinant and native SIV envelope proteins, monitoring Env expression, and supporting translational HIV/SIV vaccine and therapeutic research.
