About Human Interleukin-1 Alpha (IL-1α)

Human Interleukin-1 Alpha (IL-1α) is a potent pro-inflammatory cytokine that plays a central role in the initiation and regulation of innate and adaptive immune responses. IL-1α is produced by a wide variety of cell types, including macrophages, monocytes, epithelial cells, endothelial cells, fibroblasts, and keratinocytes. Unlike many cytokines that are secreted following activation, IL-1α can function both as a membrane-associated cytokine and as an intracellular regulator, allowing it to act as an early alarm signal during tissue injury, infection, and cellular stress. Upon binding to the Interleukin-1 Receptor Type I (IL-1R1), IL-1α activates signaling pathways including NF-κB and MAPK, leading to the expression of inflammatory mediators, cytokines, chemokines, and adhesion molecules.

IL-1α is a key mediator of inflammation and contributes to numerous physiological and pathological processes including immune cell recruitment, fever induction, wound healing, host defense, and tissue remodeling. Because of its ability to rapidly initiate inflammatory responses, IL-1α has become an important target for studies of inflammation, autoimmune diseases, cancer biology, infectious diseases, and cytokine signaling. The cytokine is widely utilized in research investigating inflammatory pathways, immune regulation, tumor microenvironment biology, and cellular responses to injury and stress.

eEnzyme's recombinant Human Interleukin-1 Alpha (IL-1α) provides a valuable reagent for cell culture, immunology research, inflammation studies, cancer biology investigations, and cytokine signaling analysis. The protein is suitable for immune cell activation assays, inflammatory response studies, NF-κB pathway investigations, cytokine production assays, and studies of IL-1 receptor-mediated signaling. Researchers can utilize recombinant IL-1α to investigate mechanisms of inflammation, immune regulation, host-pathogen interactions, and therapeutic target discovery.

Biological Significance of IL-1α

IL-1α is one of the earliest cytokines released during tissue injury and cellular stress and serves as a critical initiator of inflammatory responses. Activation of IL-1R1 by IL-1α triggers signaling cascades that promote cytokine production, leukocyte recruitment, endothelial activation, and immune cell stimulation. In addition to its role in acute inflammation, IL-1α contributes to chronic inflammatory diseases, tumor progression, fibrosis, and immune-mediated disorders. The cytokine functions as an important danger-associated molecular pattern (DAMP) molecule that alerts the immune system to cellular damage and promotes host defense mechanisms. Because of its central role in regulating inflammation and immune responses, IL-1α remains one of the most extensively studied cytokines in immunology, cancer research, and therapeutic development.
